Trivium : Vol - 4 : No - 1 : Issue - 6
The present issue contains a bunch of essays with topics ranging from the
Renaissance to the Modern period. Luigi Cazzato brings to focus a little
known ritual cult of Tarantismo in Southern Italy arguing the survival of
pagan practices in the Renaissance even in the face of the spread of
Humanism and Christianity. In the process he brings a post-colonial
modification to the myth of the universality of the Renaissance in Italy.
Abin Chakraborty's discussion of Vishal Bhardwaj's adaptation of Hamlet
in Haider argues about the transformation of Hamlet into a 'radical
antagonist' to the Indian nation-state in Haider, affirming the universality
of the Shakespearean mould. Giovanni Patriarca focuses on the
international influence of Mohandas Gandhi in the figure of Lanza del
Vasto, a Western disciple, arguing that Vasto made a substantial
intervention in the spread of the idea of non-violence in Europe. Debarati
Nandy argues that in the last few decades, qualitative research
methodology is being increasingly pursued in a number of institutions
since this methodology is ideal for analyzing human behaviour. The essays
by Nandita Deb and Saminah Khan attempt to enrich the discourse on
education through their several arguments. While Deb highlights the need
for rapid diffusion of media technology in higher education, Khan argues
for holistic education as the desirable pursuit for educationists and
strategists in the field. The essay by Puja Banerjee focuses on the internal
estrangement of three women characters in the Bengali novel Kinu Goalar
Gali highlighting the centrality of women characters in Modern Bengali
novels. Written in English, the essay facilitates a greater scope for the
understanding of Santosh Kumar Ghosh's work. Sangita Tripathi Mitra
and Ruby Noor throw light on a little- known Bengali novelist Afsar
Ahmed. They explain the social concern of the novelist on the issue of
divorce or Talaq of Muslim women.
