Abstract:

The tight, systematic form of the sonnet and the intense, reckless lifestyle of Bengali poet Shakti Chattopadhyay were diametrically opposed. Yet, why did he embrace the sonnet in his early years as a poet, viewing it as an opportunity or support? Was there a poetic aesthetic driving this choice, or was it merely an exercise in mastering word control and arranging them in rhyme schemes? This article seeks to shed light on these questions while also exploring the form of sonnet that he idealized. Not only does Shakti exhibit a liberal, anti-fastidious attitude towards words, but he also blends so-called 'elegant' and 'crude' elements in an attempt to create a 'counterculture' in his poetry. Shakti Chattopadhyay's poetry remains untethered by the constraints of thought and language. Even clear utterances aspire to become subtle hints – a perspective that we will also explore.
