Abstract:

Society and state are needed for the development of civilization. The first step in society is the human family. Family life begins only with marriage. The family is formed through marriage to resolve the conflict between the needs of the society and the biological needs of the individual. In this article, I try to present the evolution of the marriage customs of the Santal tribe of Paschim Medinipur district. The Santals, one of the major primitive tribes of India, inhabit a large part of Paschim Medinipur district. Avoiding the contact of civilized and urban society, this community builds its habitat in a sylvan environment of villages. The life of the Santals is governed by their own social and cultural rules and their wedding arrangements are held in this atmosphere. The full form of their society is reflected in the Santal marriage practices. I will attempt to find out how under the pressure of change the Santal society carefully preserves its old tradition through the marriage system. However, in the age of globalization, especially in the industrialized areas, the marriage system of Santals, like in other fields, has entered into harmony with other communities. I will highlight the basic old marriage customs and traditions of Santal society.
